Hopes loom high for recycling

August 5, 2009

There is good news to report about recycling in Gallup and Mckinley County today. Thanks to the efforts of the Solid waste authority, the county Commissioner, The North West New Mexico Council of Governments, the Mckinley Citizen's Recycling Council, the New Mexico Recycling Coalition and other concerned interests Funding has been found to begin work on creating a centralized recycling facility on Hasler Valley Road in Gallup. Zia Engineering is putting forth a plan that will lay out the particulars and it should be completed by mid September.

A commission of interested parties has been formed that includes members of the organizations listed above and other groups public, private and non-profit. This commission will meet to determine how and where the recyclables will be disbursed, discuss questions of management of the facility that will likely grow over the years and on educating the community on the importance of recycling.

This is the first time that so many interested parties have gathered to help implement a coordinated and centralized recycling program in this area. Once the report is completed by Zia Engineering, work should commence almost immediately to make the facility operational. We Are hoping  for a grand opening and speeches by late October or early November.

    Landfill is Filling Up

The New Mexico Environment Department held a
hearing at the county court house on January 27, to
consider expanding the Red Rock Regional Landfill.
A decision should be made in a few months. In the
meantime we, as citizens, should be trying to decrease
the amount of waste sent there by recycling what we can.
The fact that the Rainbow Recycling Center was closed
is not helpful. A new site has been located and work has
begun in preparing it for use.

Pantry Commits to Recycling

In a letter of intent the Community Pantry has agreed to collect all paper products except newsprint that are brought to the future recycling center and to ready them for transport. Taking on such responsibility is commendable and helps MCRC to get the backing required to bring recycling to Gallup in a big way. Thanks to the Pantry.
